Roofing History

The first known roofing was mammoth skin, in Siberia, c 40,000 BC.

The Romans introduced slating and tiling to Great Britain as early as 100 BC.

Thatched roofs were introduced and implemented around the year 735 AD.

Early roofs, constructed on frameworks of thick branches or timbers, allowed different roof styles to develop.
When brick and stone began to be used in buildings, people would construct domes and vaults, which are roof forms based on arches.

In the 12th century, to reduce the risk of spreading fire, King John issued a law that London citizens had to replace their thatch and reed roof-coverings with clay tiles.

Dreadnought clay tiles began production in 1805.
One hundred year after that, came concrete tiles.

Dreadnought tiles: 'Natural Clay Roof Tiles; true clay colours crafted using only earth, fire, water and passion since 1805.'
